We're making climate insurance accessible to everyone

Our Story

Suyana began with a simple question: Why do 70% of climate disaster losses remain uninsured?

Fresh out of college, our CEO Rodrigo García explored innovative insurance solutions for farmers in his hometown in Bolivia as part of an undergraduate research project. He witnessed firsthand how traditional insurance failed the people who needed it most. Despite their desperate need for protection against droughts and floods, coverage was either unaffordable or unavailable. This early work revealed a fundamental truth: the existing system wasn't just inadequate—it was broken.

For over a decade, that question stayed with him. Through his work at the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank, and his studies at Harvard, Rodrigo continued searching for a solution. The founding team met in graduate school at Harvard University, where they realized that converging technologies—satellite imagery, climate modeling, and AI—could finally solve this problem. In 2024, Suyana was born.

Our name means "hope" in Quechua, reflecting our commitment to communities facing climate change. Today, we've assembled a world-class team of climate scientists, data scientists, and insurance experts to deliver on that promise. We've built proprietary technology that achieves 400x better geographic precision than existing solutions, and we've pioneered an embedded distribution model that makes protection accessible through bank loans and existing financial channels.

We are the first Latin American company selected for the Lloyd's Lab accelerator program. We're backed by Halcyon Ventures, Side Door Ventures, and prominent impact investors, with support from IDB and UNICEF. We've secured pilots in Bolivia and Colombia that will protect thousands of businesses and farmers starting in 2026. And we're just getting started.

The Suyana Team

Our Values

Suyana means “hope” in Quechua. Hope is not passive. It requires truth about the problems we face, the agency to act on them, and a relentless focus on impact for the communities we serve.

These three values guide how we work, who we hire, and how we show up for our partners and clients. We keep them few so they stay real.

Truth-Seeking

We pursue accurate understanding over comfortable narratives.

Our product is only as good as the integrity of our data and the honesty of our team. We are climate scientists, data scientists, and engineers. We approach problems with curiosity and intellectual humility, and we follow the evidence wherever it leads.

We surface findings even when they complicate the story, for clients, partners, and each other. We ask “how do we know this?” before making claims. We communicate transparently about progress, challenges, and tradeoffs. Our partners and clients trust us because we deliver the truth, not the version that’s easiest to sell.

Agency

We own our work from beginning to end. No one needs to tell us what to do next.

We are a small team on a mission to protect millions of people across multiple countries and climate perils. That’s only possible because every member of Suyana takes full ownership of their work and delivers results, not updates.

We take initiative without waiting for permission. We are resourceful with limited resources, finding creative paths forward rather than waiting for perfect conditions. We are courageous enough to make decisions, move fast, and course-correct when needed. We measure ourselves by what we ship.

Impact

We exist to protect vulnerable communities against climate disasters. Every task connects to that mission.

The climate protection gap leaves 70% of losses uninsured worldwide, rising to 90% in developing countries. That’s not an abstract statistic. It’s farmers losing their harvest, fishermen losing their boats, families losing their homes. We work with urgency because the problem demands it.

We measure success by outcomes: hectares covered, families protected, payouts delivered. We make individual contributions to a team effort that is larger than any one of us. We build for scale because solutions that help hundreds must become solutions that help millions. And we balance that urgency with rigor, because getting it wrong undermines the very communities we serve.

We hire for these values.

If Truth-Seeking, Agency, and Impact describe how you work, we'd love to hear from you.
